A local camping trip – thoughts of going further

This weekend, we packed up the van and went camping at Cae Du near Beddgelert. We weren’t sure what we wanted to do so took bikes, gear for gorge walking and mountain walking but still it was just a weekend and we absolutely filled the van. Not just this weekend either, on reflection I see that we are no longer the same lightweight travellers that we once were (I’m not talking about the reflection in the mirror). Be prepared seems to be our motto and every time we leave the house we seem to have more stuff than we can carry. Perhaps our being prepared is really just not having to think too hard about what we’re really going to need. We’re going to have to be much more disciplined if we’re going to cut back to just what we can carry for 6 months. I can manage with less clothes (just turn those pants inside out) but what about gadgets and technical kit? Then there’s the kids, they may be small but they seem to have as much stuff as Jo and I and possibly more. The thing is, our travel bags from last time are bigger than either of them, they’d be like some sort of tortoise all shell and no legs if we give them bags that size. So somehow over the next year we’re going to have to wean ourselves off throwing it all in and start to be more selective. Right I’m off to pack for work in the morning … laptop, phone, keys, sailing kit, gym kit just in case, paperwork, glasses, spare glasses,……

Perhaps we didn’t travel as light as I remember
