Trekking Fitzroy

Wow, we have just returned from a wonderful 3 day trek from El Chalten to see Cerro Fitz Roy and Cerro Torros. After our torrents of rain in the Torres Del Paine we have been blessed with sunshine, blue skies and amazing views.
We loaded up our packs with essentials ( chocolate is obviously an essential!) and headed off up the valley from El Chalten. The walk was through pretty woodland, and below us we could see the bluey grey river winding along the valley, and above us the rocky and snowy peaks of the mountains. We reached our campsite in a wooded area and put up out tents, had lunch and set off to follow the river to the glacier at Piedras Blancas. It was a fun scramble up huge boulders and across the river to the lake by the glacier where icebergs floated and while Matt and I sat enjoying the sun, Ellie and Will had great fun throwing rocks at small icebergs to try and turn them over. We returned to camp and sat in a clearing to cook our tea while admiring the amazing Fitz Roy mountains.
We woke at 5 am the next morning to begin a moonlit walk up a steep slope to a lake at the bottom of the glacier. We sat eating our hard boiled eggs and watched the mountains turn pink in the sunrise….magical! We returned to our camp, took down the tents and continued our trek to the next valley to see Cerro Torres. All the way we had stunning views of the mountains and snowy peaks against the clear blue sky. We reached our next campsite, a pretty woodland spot by the river, and after putting up the tents we walked to the lake and along to the Maestri viewpoint, again beautiful views of the glacier, lake and mountains. After tea we returned to watch the sunset at the lake.
After a very cold night ( even the lake had iced up!) We started our walk back to El Chalten. We walked through pretty woodland and even saw a red headed woodpecker just next to us in the tree. The walk back was beautiful, and we have now showered, washed the laundry and are off to find WiFi to put up the blog.
