I think rice is rather nice!

Snug in the rice terraces

Recently we have been to see rice terraces. Rice terraces are cut into earth by hand (by hand I mean with tools, or the people would have VERY dirty hands!).The terraces traced the hillsides contours  and every where you looked, from the bottom of the valley to the top of the highest hills were green and brown terraces of rice and crops.

We spent one day in a cloud of fog and we couldn’t see more than a meter in front of us. But our praying paid off and the next day we were able to see the fields we hadn’t known existed the day before. We spent a lot of the time admiring the amazing work of the people. There were millions, we could hardly believe this sight in front of our eyes. Because it was autumn the rice had been harvested but we could see the reminding stalks and we could sometimes see the rice growing. As well as rice the people grew other things and the green of the veg was vivid and lush. The people had also cleverly designed a special tube that carried the water to the fields, this irrigation  system used bamboo and channels from the river to the crops. We saw another example of this when we visited the Dong village where the Wind and Rain bridge is. By the river they had set up bamboo waterwheels that lifted water from the river into the high fields by bamboo pipes.

We had some lovely weather while walking to Ping an. We met some ladies who had very long hair, their long hair had seemed to make them vain and every time we walked close to a river  they wanted  us to pay them to take a photo of them sloshing their hair in the river! They were even worse than me!

The Wind and Rain bridge is a wooden covered bridge which took 12 years to make and had no nails ( by nails I do not mean nails like you have on your fingers!). It was spectacular, especially when we visited it at night.

Now we are back in Guilin and tomorrow we are going to YongShouw. In YongShouw we are going to hopefully travel along the river and go to a fan place. Goodbye until then:)
