The Great Wall

Well we are now in Xian. We traveled on a sleeper train here from Beijing. The train has rooms with 4 beds, 2 bunks in each. At the end of the carriage is a washroom and loo. Ellie was very relieved that it wasn’t a squatting one …. she thought trying to aim on a moving train would be even harder!!! We had 3 bunks, so Will and I top and tailed on a lower bunk.

We had a great day yesterday on The Great Wall. It was raining as we left Beijing, but brightened up throughout the day, and by 3pm was beautiful sunshine. Our trek was along from an original piece of wall, to a restored section. The old wall had plants and trees growing out of the fallen rocks and bricks and was quite an adventurous scramble up watch towers and along the wall. The restored section was much easier to walk along, although some of the steps were very long and steep. It was good to see how the wall would have looked like originally. Seeing the wall snake along ridges of the mountains interupted by watchtowers was an amazing sight.
